Lawendelgasse

History

The section from Kleine Bäckergasse to Hakelwerk was called Lawendelgasse. From 1663 the name Jungferngasse appears, and in 1694 it is finally established in the known extension. In parallel, the old name was used until the 18th century. It seems to be an ironic name in this case - Lawendelgasse probably smelled of something other than Lawendel. In contrast to the two Lawendelgassen in the Rechtstadt, prostitution seems to have been practiced here. Hence the later "Jungferngasse".
