Große Pfaffengasse

Papengasse, Pfaffengasse

History

At the beginning a simple "cross alley to Brotbänkengasse", from 1416 Papengasse or Pfaffengasse. Only around 1800 temporarily Große Pfaffengasse, to distinguish it from Kleinen Pfaffengasse, the later Erste Priestergasse. The name comes from the priests who also lived in this alley, in priests' houses. According to Theodor Hirsch, about 240 of them lived in Gdansk around 1500. No wonder that they inhabited several alleys. Even today it is translated as Pfaffengasse.
