Maximilian-Block-Weg

History

Maximilian Block (1853-1931) was a significant figure in the development of the Kolonia housing estate in Wrzeszcz, Gdańsk. He was the founder and first manager of the Wohnungsgenossenschaft Neuschottland (New Scotland Housing Society), which oversaw the construction of housing for employees of the Imperial Shipyard. The estate, built on land purchased by the Reichsmarineamt in 1906, featured residential buildings designed by architects from the Technische Hochschule Danzig.

Under Block's management, the estate grew, with expansions including new housing and a railway stop. After his death in 1931, a street was named Maximilian-Block-Weg in his honor, though it was later renamed Neptunweg, now known as ul. Sochaczewska. Block's contributions helped shape the community in this important industrial area of Gdańsk.
