Prüfenergasse

History

First explicitly mentioned in 1449 as the residence of the "Prevener," and later in 1515 as Probenergasse. By 1608, the name Kleine Nonnengasse appeared, running parallel to the modified Prüfenergasse, which disappeared around 1700. The name likely derives from the Latin *praebenda*, meaning benefice. "Probener" or "Prevener" referred to people who bought into the monastery and lived off its support, similar to modern-day pensioners. Today's ulica Profesorska includes the former Kleine Nonnengasse and Professorgasse.
